Ecstasy tablets that could be deadly are being found in Europe

Some tablets being sold as ecstasy in Europe contain a drug called PMMA. PMMA is a stimulant that can cause serious illness and, in some cases, death.

There is currently no evidence that these tablets are being sold in the UK, but they could appear here in the future.

PMMA can take longer to have an effect than MDMA (the drug usually found in ecstasy). It can also feel weaker at first. This may lead people to take more tablets while waiting for the effects, which greatly increases the risk of an overdose.

You cannot tell what is in a tablet by its colour, shape or logo. The only way to avoid the risk from an unknown tablet is not to take it.

If you decide to take a tablet sold as ecstasy:

• Do not take more if the effects seem weak or are taking a long time to start.

• Do not mix it with alcohol or other drugs.

Call 999 immediately if someone:

• Becomes very hot or confused

• Has a seizure (fit)

• Has chest pain or difficulty breathing

• Collapses or becomes unconscious

Getting medical help quickly could save their life.
